La critica regionale statunitense sembra non arrivare ad un accordo; dopo New York e la National Board of Review, le associazioni di stampa cinematografica di Detroit, Atlanta e Washington hanno incoronato tre film differenti.
La critica di Washington ha premiato Belfast di Kenneth Branagh miglior film, quella di Detroit il musical Cyrano, mentre quella di Atlanta Licorice Pizza di Paul Thomas Anderson. Miglior regia per Jane Campion ad Atlanta e Washington, a Detroit a sorpresa la spunta Lin-Manuel Miranda. Migliori attori Peter Dinklage, Andrew Garfield e Benedict Cumberbatch:
