L’Academy ha annunciato le shortlist per ben nove categorie. Tra queste c’è anche quella dedicata al miglior film straniero, che quest’anno comprende 10 titoli, tra i quali ritroviamo gli ovvi Parasite, Dolor y Gloria, Atlantique, Les Miserables, ma anche The Painted Bird e il documentario Honeyland, fuori l’Italia e Monos, dato quasi per scontato alla vigilia dell’annuncio.
Tra le altre shortlist troviamo quella dedicata ai documentari, dove praticamente tutti i titoli papabili per una candidatura al premio sono rimasti in gara, l’unica esclusione davvero notevole è quella di Diego Maradona di Asif Kapadia. Tra le canzoni rientrano ben due canzoni de Il re leone e ben due canzoni di Elton John, essendo un anno piuttosto vuoto per la categoria tutti i nomi attesi alla fine sono rientrati in questa shortlist, l’unica assenza di peso è quella di “Beautiful Ghosts”, il brano scritto da Andrew Lloyd Webber e Taylor Swift per Cats. Tra le colonne sonore spazio a Joker e Storia di un matrimonio, ma anche a Dolor y Gloria, The Farewell e Noi.
