Sono stati annunciati i candidati di quest’anno ai Satellite Awards, i riconoscimenti della International Press Academy che annualmente premiano il meglio di cinema e tv e, proprio come i Golden Globe, sono divisi in categorie dedicate a prodotti drammatici e a prodotti comici. Ad ottenere il maggior numero di candidature sono Le Mans ’66 – La grande sfida di James Mangold e Joker di Todd Phillips, a quota 10, seguono con 8 candidature a testa Storia di un matrimonio e 1917. Tutti e quattro i film sono candidati nella categoria principale, ma Joker, a differenza degli altri, non ha ottenuto anche la candidatura alla regia, mentre 1917 non è rientrato tra le migliori sceneggiature.
Tra le varie sorprese di queste nomination troviamo Mark Ruffalo, alla sua prima candidatura per il dramma investigativo Dark Waters, e George MacKay, giovane rivelazione di 1917, ma anche Helen Mirren per il thriller L’inganno perfetto, Penelope Cruz per Dolor y Gloria, ma soprattutto Wendell Pierce per Burning Cane, la folgorante opera prima del diciannovenne Phillip Youmans, candidata anche al miglior film drammatico, che gli ha fatto ottenere, finora, il premio al miglior attore al Tribeca Film Festival e una nomination agli Independent Spirit Awards.
Come succede spesso nelle cerimonie che dividono tra dramma e commedia, i titoli candidati sono molti e molto vari, e caratterizzano una selezione particolarmente eterogenea. Se nel dramma ritroviamo molti titoli di punta della stagione dei premi, nelle sezioni dedicate alle comedy degne di nota sono le numerose candidature ottenute da Le ragazze di Wall Street, Cena con Delitto e The Farewell, a tutti gli effetti i film più insospettabili della stagione dei premi, che fino a questo punto stanno ottenendo risultati straordinari. Ottime prestazioni anche per Rocketman, qui ai Satellite Awards, grandi assenti sono, invece, sono Jojo Rabbit e La rivincita delle sfigate.
Nelle categorie televisive ritroviamo alcuni dei titoli più apprezzati della stagione come Chernobyl, Unbealiveable, Fleabag e Succession, ma anche delle gradite sorprese come The Act, Mr. Mercedes e The Righteous Gemstones.
